Girl Scout Troop No. 2009, members of St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Clifton, are about more than cookies. They demonstrated their support for literacy by creating a Little Free Library in Clifton, the next best thing for a town without a public library.

The ribbon-cutting for the library took place May 20 at the Clifton Community Center. The Girl Scouts were joined by local authors Ed Ehlers and David Fulcher, who did readings, local delegate and supporter Tim Hugo and Clifton Mayor William Hollaway. The girls provided cookies and lemonade.

The troop raised money through a gofundme page. There also was an opportunity to donate at the ribbon-cutting ceremony by buying a silver sticker bookplate to honor a loved one.

The whole process helped the girls learn about the inner-workings of local government. They appeared before the Clifton Town Council and architectural review board, which approved the library’s placement in front of the community center.

“They are happy to have the library find a home in the town and are sure it will be a source of enjoyment for years to come,” said troop co-leader Carolyn Machado.
