Birthright of Fredericksburg to host gala

“Celebrating 40 Years of Loving Them Both” is the theme for Birthright’s gala and fundraiser Oct. 22, at the Fredericksburg Country Club, 11031 Tidewater Trail, Fredericksburg, 6-10 p.m. The local chapter of Birthright, Fredericksburg’s first pro-life service organization, was started in 1976 by Irene Hagerty to help women facing unplanned pregnancy.

Mother and child — loving them both — is Birthright’s focus as it fulfills its mission statement: “It is the right of every pregnant woman to give birth and the right of every child to be born.” Director Lily Alarcon and the staff members are volunteers. Each year, the group welcomes about 1,000 women, and administers more than 800 pregnancy tests at the office at 2006 Lafayette Blvd.

Serrin Foster, president of Feminists for Life in Alexandria, will be keynote speaker. The event also will feature artwork with a mother and child theme created by student artists from Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School in Dumfries. Their work will be sold in a silent auction. A raffle of artwork will feature local artists, including Father Donald Rooney, pastor of St. Bernadette Church.
