ARLINGTON For the children at St. Agnes School in Arlington, Monday morning
began with a Mass at the church to honor Mary. The closing hymn at Mass was "We Are
Called." The children sang, "We are called to act with justice, we are called to
love tenderly, we are called to serve one another; to walk humbly with God!" After
Mass, the children put these words into action by praying the rosary and donating cans of
Campbells Chunky Soup to the Arlington Food Assistance Center.
Msgr. James W. McMurtrie, pastor, was responsible for bringing the Chunky Soup Drive to
St. Agnes School. He has seen how much the Chunky Soup Drive at Bishop OConnell High
School has helped Christ House in Alexandria, and he hopes that the Chunky Soup Drive will
become a tradition at St. Agnes. Msgr. McMurtrie also started the Chunky Soup tradition at
St. Theresa School in Ashburn.
Over 400 cans of Campbells Chunky Soup were brought by the students and teachers
of St. Agnes School. The students also make sandwiches throughout the year to help the
homeless in Alexandria.
