PVI to Graduate Largest Class Ever

Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax will hold its graduation ceremony for 294 students Sunday, June 2, at 2:30 p.m. at the George Mason University Patriot Center. The Class of 2002 is the largest ever to graduate from Paul VI.

The Baccalaureate Mass will be offered Friday, May 31, at St. Timothy Church in Chantilly at 7:30 p.m.

Deputy secretary of state Richard Lee Armitage will be the commencement speaker. Armitage’s daughter Alice is graduating from the Options Program at Paul VI.

Student speakers will be valedictorian Matthew Carroll and salutatorian Christopher Russell, both of All Saints Parish in Manassas.

An altar server at All Saints, Carroll has been named a Monroe Scholar at the College of William and Mary where he plans to double major in computer science and music. He is a member of the Paul VI Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band, as well as the National Honor Society, Student Leadership Youth Corps, Computer Club and Teens for Life. Carroll is also an active member of Boy Scout Troop 1188 in Manassas. The project Carroll completed for his Eagle Scout award was building a retaining wall and landscaping the rectory slope for All Saints Parish.

For the past year, Russell has volunteered each week at Golden Years and More, an assisted living facility in Manassas. He plans to major in international relations at Johns Hopkins University. Russell’s school activities include National Honor Society, Student Leadership Youth Corps and It’s Academic. He also serves as treasurer of Model UN.
