The Bishop Ireton girls track team pulled off a
surprise victory at the Virginia State Catholic Championships in Richmond on May 11.
Ireton came in first with 142 points, ahead of Paul VI (129 points) and Bishop O'Connell
(111 points).
Ireton was led by the distance running of Jessica Wolfe and the versatility of Laura
Kaye. Wolfe won the 1600 meter run in 5:18.03 and the 3200 meter run in 11:48.28. Kaye,
who also starred for Ireton's basketball and soccer teams, was first in the 200 meter
dash, the 300 meter hurdles, and the long jump. She also finished second in the high jump
and anchored the 4x400 meter relay to a second place finish.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Meghan Glassmacher, Caitlyn Conron, Megan O'Donnell, and
Emily Brant garnered first place points with their winning time of 10:30.59. Second place
points also came from Claire Kugler in the 1600 meter run and Brant in the 800 meter run.
Important points also came from Kristin Filler with her third place finish in the shot put
and sixth place in the discus.
Nick Mazzenga led the Ireton boys team with a first place finish in the 800 meter run
in 2:04 and a second place finish in the 1600 meter run. Nick Continetti also helped the
scoring by placing third in the 200 meter run. The 4x400 relay team anchored by Mazzenga
also picked up a third place finish as the boys team finished the meet with 30 points.
