
Priests in Diocese to Celebrate Jubilees

Seven priests in the Arlington Diocese are
celebrating jubilee anniversaries this year, marking 25, 50 or 65 years of ordained
ministry in the Church. Twelve other priests are celebrating anniversaries of 30, 35, 40
and 45 years. Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde will be celebrant and homilist for a
Jubilee Mass for priests on Tuesday, May 14, at Christ the Redeemer Church in Sterling at

65th Anniversary
Msgr. THOMAS P. SCANNELL
Msgr. Thomas P. Scannell celebrated the 65th anniversary of his 1937
ordination on March 19 with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Agnes Parish in Arlington, where
he resides.
Msgr. Scannell was born on Sept. 19, 1910, in Brooklyn, N.Y., one of
seven children of Daniel and Anna Scannell.
He attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., on a football
scholarship. Through his meeting at Holy Cross with Louis Flaherty, later bishop of
Richmond, Msgr. Scannell began to consider a vocation to the priesthood.
Msgr. Scannell attended the North American College in Rome, where he was
ordained on March 19, 1937.
His first assignment was as assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in
Norfolk from 1937-1941. In 1941, Msgr. Scannell moved to St. Charles Borromeo Parish in
Arlington. He served there until he became a World War II Army chaplain, serving in
England until 1946.
After the war, Msgr. Scannell returned to St. Charles as assistant
pastor from 1946-1951. His first pastorate was at St. Mary of Sorrows Parish in Fairfax
Station from 1951-1953. During this time, he founded Catholic Charities of Northern
Virginia and served as its director for five years.
As founding pastor of St. Michael Parish in Annandale, where he served
from 1953-1986, Msgr. Scannell oversaw the building of the parish church and school.
After retiring in 1986, Msgr. Scannell lived at St. Luke Parish in
McLean until moving to St. Agnes in 1993, where he is currently in residence.
50th Anniversary
Fr. LOUIS J. GAGNARD
Father Louis John Gagnard, a retired priest residing in the Diocese of
Arlington, was born May 20, 1921 in Hessmer, La. He attended Hessmer elementary and high
schools and graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute with a bachelors degree
in 1942. He earned his first masters degree from Louisiana State University in 1946.
He studied at Theological College in Washington from 1948-1952, and received his second
bachelors degree from Catholic University in 1948 and his second masters from
Catholic University in 1970.
Father Gagnard was ordained May 10, 1952 in Alexandria. He celebrated
his first Mass on May 12. 1952 at St. Alphonse in Hessmer, La. He was then associate
pastor of St. Catherine of Sienna in Shreveport, La. from 1952-1955. Over the next 20
years, he served as chancellor, retreat director, high school faculty, secretary to the
Matrimonial Court and hospital chaplain in his diocese. He was pastor of Immaculate Heart
Church in Louisiann from 1979-1991. In June 1991, Father Gagnard retired at age 70 to the
Diocese of Arlington.
FR. AIDAN MULLANEY
Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Penance Father Aidan Mullaney will
celebrate his 50th anniversary as a priest on May 24, 2002.
Father Mullaney was born in Twekesbury, Mass., on Nov. 21, 1925. He
enter the Sacred Heart Novitiate in Loretto, Pa. on Jun. 19, 1944, and took his first vows
there on Jan. 15, 1946. He took his solemn vows at Mt. Assisi Friary in Loretto on Jan.
15, 1949 and was also later ordained a deacon there. At the Cathedral of Blessed Sacrament
in Altoona, Pa., he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Richard Guilfoyle on May 24,
1952.
Father Mullaney earned a bachelors degree in philosophy at St.
Francis College in Loretto in 1949, and studied theology at St. Francis Seminary in
Loretto for his ordination from 1948-1952. He received a licentiate of sacred theology at
Catholic University in Washington in 1953 and a doctorate of the same degree at the
Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1955. He was conferred an honorary degree in
sacred theology by his religious order in 1998.
His ministerial history includes being on faculty at the institutions
of: St. Francis Seminary for six months in 1956 and from 1962-1970; at St. Thomas More
High School in Philadelphia for the academic year of 1956-1957; and at St. Francis College
for the academic years of 1957-1962. He served in parochial ministry for the Archdiocese
of Philadelphia for several months in 1970 and on faculty at St. John Vianney Seminary in
Ohio for the academic years of 1970-1972. He took leave at the Trappist community in Monks
Corner, S. C. for the following academic year. A member of the Franciscan Community in
Code, Ala. from late 1973-early 1974, he was then director of the Franciscan Center (now
called the Sacred Heart Friary) in White Post, Va. from 1974-1978 and a member of the
Portiuncula Friary in Boston, Va. for two years from 1978-1979. He served as chaplain at
the Veterans Hospital in Pittsburgh for most of 1980 and at the Sisters of Charity
community in Carrolton, Ohio, from late 1980 to mid-1981.
On staff at Sts. Cosmas and Damian in Rome from late-1981 through most
of 1989, Father Mullaney was also concurrently general councilor there beginning in
late-1983. He was on staff at the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio for the
academic year 1989-90, then took a four-month sabbatical at the University of Notre Dame
in Indiana, and returned to Franciscan University until mid-1997. During the academic year
1997-98 he was on staff at Franciscan Universitys Austria Campus. He served as
assistant novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Loretto from mid-1998-March 2000, at
which time he began his current assignment as local minister of Sacred Heart Friary in
White Post, Va.
45th Anniversary
Msgr. THOMAS J. CASSIDY
Ordained Sept. 26, 1957, Msgr. Thomas J. Cassidy will celebrate 45 years
as a priest this year. He is currently the pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish in
Purcellville.
Fr. MICHAEL DANIEL
Franciscan Friars of the Atonement Father Michael Daniel, in residence
at Christ the Redeemer in Sterling, celebrates 45 years since his ordination this June. He
was ordained on June 11, 1957.
40th Anniversary
Msgr. JAMES W. McMURTRIE
Msgr. James W. McMurtrie, pastor of St. Theresa Parish in Ashburn,
celebrates 40 years as a priest this month. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 1,
1962.
35th Anniversary
Fr. CLARENCE N. WATKINS
Fr. Clarence N. Watkins, who is now retired, was ordained to the
priesthood on May 13, 1967 and celebrates his 35th anniversary this year.
Fr. ROBERT A. BROWN
Oblates of St. Francis de Sales Father Robert A. Brown, ordained Oct.
21, 1967, will celebrate 35 years as a priest later this year. He is currently pastor of
St. John Neumann Parish in Reston.
30th Anniversary
Fr. DANIEL E. HAMILTON
Father Daniel E. Hamilton was ordained May 13, 1972 and is celebrating
30 years in the priesthood. He is currently the pastor of St. Mary Parish in
Fredericksburg.
Fr. VINCENT COLLINS
Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance Father Vincent Collins,
ordained May 5, 1972, recently marked 30 years as a priest. He is living at the Cistercian
Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Cross in Berryville.
Fr. JOSEPH GIORDANO
Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Father Joseph Giordano will
have been a priest for 30 years when he celebrates his anniversary May 27. He was ordained
in 1972. Currently, he is rector and director of promotion of the Congregation the
Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Fr. JOHN GRINNEN
Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Penance Father John Grinnen was
ordained May 6, 1972 and has been a priest for 30 years. He is at Sacred Heart Friary in
White Post, Va.
Fr. C. DONALD HOWARD
Franciscan Friars of the Atonement Father C. Donald Howard, currently
pastor of Christ the Redeemer Parish in Sterling, celebrates 30 years in the priesthood
June 3. He was ordained in 1972.
Fr. ANTHONY J. MASTROENI
Fr. Anthony J. Mastroeni is the chaplain of Christendom College in Front
Royal, where he is also a theology professor. Ordained in 1972, he celebrates 30 years as
a priest May 27.
Fr. ROBERT J. MENARD
Franciscan Father Robert J. Menard, parochial vicar at St. Francis of
Assisi Parish in Triangle, was ordained Sept. 13, 1972, and is celebrating 30 years in the
priesthood.
25th Anniversary
Fr. JEROME W. FASANO
Father Jerome W. Fasano, pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in
Clifton, recently marked 25 years as a priest. Born to Julius and Yolanda Fasano, in
Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 14, 1949, Father Fasano attended Brooklyn Public School and then
received his bachelors degree in philosophy from St. Stephens in Dover, Mass.
He attended seminary at Immaculate Conception in Huntington, N.Y, where he earned a
masters degree and graduated in 1975. He was ordained May 7, 1977, by Bishop Thomas
J. Welsh.
Father Fasanos deaconate assignment was at St. Ambrose in
Annandale. After his ordination, he was associate pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish
in Winchester. From 1979-1985 he was associate pastor of St. Michael Pariah in Annandale.
From 1985-1989 he was associate pastor of St. John Parish in McLean. Father Fasano was
pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Great Falls from 1989 until 1997, when he
became pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish.
Fr. STEPHEN ROSZEL
Father Stephen Roszel was born in Nashua, N.H., on Oct. 6, 1951, one of
eight children of Joseph Richard and Rita Eileen (Gagnon) Roszel. He attended grammar
school at St. James in Falls Church and graduated high school from St. John Vianney
Seminary in Richmond in 1969. He attended college at St. Marys Seminary in
Baltimore, Md., graduating in 1973. Father Roszel attended theological seminary at
American College of University of Louvain, Belgium, where he received his graduate degree
in 1976. He was ordained to the priesthood by Arlington Founding Bishop Thomas J. Welsh on
July 9, 1977.
After his ordination, Father Roszel was assigned to St. Ann Church in
Arlington until May 1980, when he moved to Our Lady of Lourdes in Arlington. He remained
in residence at Our Lady of Lourdes while taking a semester of canon law studies at
Catholic University.
From January through May 1981, Father Roszel was associate pastor of St.
Mary Church in Alexandria. He was then associate pastor of St. Philip in Falls Church
until 1984, when he became associate pastor of Blessed Sacrament in Alexandria until 1988.
For the next year, Father Roszel resumed graduate studies at Catholic University, where he
received a degree in canon law in 1990. He was also assistant director of the National
Shrine of the Immaculate Conception during this time.
Father Roszel became pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Alexandria in
1990. Currently, he is in residence at St. Rita Parish in Alexandria.
Fr. JOSEPH MUKUI KIMATTA
Father Joseph Mukui Kimatta was born in the Kiambu District, Kenya, on
May 26, 1949.
Father Mukui was ordained to the priesthood on Aug. 14, 1977, by
Archdiocese of Nairobi Cardinal Michael Maurice Otunga. He is a priest of that diocese.
Father Mukui is currently in residence at Queen of Apostles Parish in
Alexandria while studying at the John Paul II Institute. He was granted faculties in the
Diocese of Arlington in Nov. 1991.
Fr. JOSEPH A. SALAZAR
Society of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles Father Joseph A.
Salazar was born Jan. 12, 1937 to Alfonso Salazar-Toledo and Encarnacion Solis-Realposo,
who emigrated from Merida, Yucatan, Mexico to New York in the mid-1920s. He graduated from
Rhodes Evening High School in New York City. After studying at St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt
Calvary, Wis.; St. Fidelis Friary and Novitiate in Huntington, Ind.; and
Capuchin-Franciscan Seminary of St. Mary in Crown Point, Ind. (where he majored in
philosophy and minored in education), he received a bachelors in philosophy from
Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn. in 1972. He attended graduate
studies for a masters degree in theology at Oblate College in Washington from
1972-1976.
Father Salazar was ordained by Norwich Bishop Daniel P. Reilly on March
27, 1977 in Cromwell, Conn. He then studied for his Master of Divinity degree at Holy
Apostles College and Seminary, which he received in 1982. During his time there, he was
the resident dean of students and director of seminarians. From 1980-1989, Father Salazar
was pastor of St. Michael Parish and School in New Haven, Conn. He was then novice master
at the Novitiate of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles in Lynn Haven, Fla. during 1989.
Father Salazar was chaplain in the Department of Pastoral Care of the U.S. Department of
Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons 1989- 1992. From 1992-1998, he was pastor of Our Lady of
Grace Pariah in Romney, W.Va.
Father Salazar has done extensive pastoral and teaching work in retreats
and in prison and Hispanic ministries. He is a chaplain member of the Equestrian Order of
the Holy Sepulchre Mid-Atlantic Lieutenancy in Washington.
Currently, Father Salazar is in residence at St. John Bosco in
Woodstock, where he ministers to the Hispanic population there and at Precious Blood in
Culpeper, and Our Lady of the Valley in Luray. He is also the associate vocation director
for his order.
