Bishop Loverde Comments on Approved Norms

(From the issue of 11/21/02)

"The decision of this conference of bishops that the essential norms we have approved and for which we are seeking the Holy See’s recognitio clearly reflects our unambiguous commitment to protect children and young people and to guarantee the canonical rights of all our priests, including those against whom allegations have been brought or proven," said Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde.

"Although individual offending priests, who have been rehabilitated and restored to ministry in accord with the earlier guidelines of the conference, cannot remain in ministry, the greater common good for the protection of children and young people and the restoration of trust must take precedence," he said.

"I hope that productive avenues can be found to give these priests, no longer in active ministry, new directions for their lives. I will continue to keep both victims and priests who have committed these crimes in my prayers."
