(From the issue of 9/26/02)
Twelve students from local Catholic high schools have been named semi-finalists in the
annual National Merit Scholarship program.
Six students currently attending Bishop OConnell High School in Arlington were
named semifinalists: Anne Mac Farlane, Stephen Chanderbhan, Frank Brickfield, Ezana
Teferra, Jessie DiGregory, and Pat Boland.
From Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg, Katie Keryera and Stephanie Rutledge were named
as semifinalists. Rutledge attended Bishop OConnell last year.
Michelle DeGroot is a semifinalist from Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria.
McLeans Oakcrest School also had two students named Maya Marcel-Keyes and
Adele Loria.
Craig W. Robertson was named from Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax and Sarah
LaVigne was named from Seton School in Manassas.
Over 1.3 million juniors in over 20,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2003 National
Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT. Those who are named semifinalists represent
less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Finalists will receive one of 8,000
scholarships totaling $30 million. To become finalists, those who have been named
semifinalists must maintain superior academic performance records, earn the endorsement
and recommendation of the head of their respective schools, and attain SAT scores that
reinforce their previous achievement. The semifinalists must also submit a detailed
application along with an essay and information about any school and community activities
in which they are active.
