Three-year-old Aaron Aranza checked out the
chalkboard announcement of soups being served by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas,
Court Kavanaugh No. 54, at the Lenten Soup Supper at St. Mary Lyceum in Alexandria last
Friday.
Aromas of rice minestrone, Tunisian tomato, cream of salmon and
vegetable Provencal filled the Lyceum. Aaron joined his parents and other St. Mary
parishioners at long tables covered with red-checked cloths to share the Lenten meal
before attending Stations of the Cross in the church around the corner on Royal Street.
Helen Lynch and other Catholic Daughters served soup, assisted by
Stephen DAntoni who ladled out delicious steaming potato, scallop and corn chowder.
Betty Murphy, Court Kavanaugh regent, explained that the $5 individual
and $15 family contributions collected at the door benefit St. Coletta School for children
and young adults with special needs.
The CDA puts faith into practice by promoting social justice, equality
and the advancement of human rights and dignity for all people. Court Kavanaugh, with 100
members, was founded in 1906 and has a long history of charitable work. Beneficiaries
include Alzheimers Safe Return Project, North American College in Rome, Covenant
House, Habitat for Humanity and the Julia Kenny Petrino scholarship fund of St. Mary
School.
A special project close to past regent Marian Nowlands heart is
assisting the Tutwiler Clinic run by Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary Sister Ann
Brooks, an osteopath, who founded the Mississippi Delta clinic.
The 5:15 p.m. Lenten Soup Supper at St. Mary will be held every Friday
until March 22. For information on the Soup Supper or on joining the Catholic Daughters,
contact Betty Murphy at 703/549-0907.
