The bridal gown has been ordered, invitations
chosen, a band has been signed for the reception. Whats missing?
The Arlington Diocese sees the period of preparation for the Sacrament
of Marriage as "a great opportunity for the couple to connect with the Church,"
said Robert Laird, director of the diocesan Office for Family Life. The diocese introduced
a marriage preparation policy to allow couples time to reflect on what they are about to
do and to become in light of the promises they will make.
"Marriage is," according to the Office of Family Life,
"the smallest union of persons in which Christ lives and demonstrates his desire to
show what Church is a union of persons calling each other to holiness through the
graces of our Heavenly Father."
In order to help couples properly approach the Sacrament of Marriage the
diocese has instituted certain policies and procedures. The process of marriage
preparation is:
- The bride and/or the groom must be registered in a parish of the
Arlington Diocese.
- The diocese requires a six-month marriage preparation period.
- Before making any other arrangements, notify your parish priest no later
than six months prior to the desired wedding date. Schedule an initial interview with him.
A wedding date will be set in consultation with your priest.
- Complete a FOCCUS survey at an initial meeting with your parish priest.
The survey provides indications of a couples "strengths and weaknesses" so
the priest knows what areas of readiness need improvement.
- Meet with your priest or deacon as a couple to work on marriage
preparation at least four times prior to the wedding, excluding the wedding rehearsal.
- During the first month of preparation, register by mail for either
Engaged Encounter or a Conference for the Engaged. Your priest will supply the
registration form.
- Couples are urged and may be required by their parish priest to attend
Natural Family Planning classes.
A priest may suggest that the couple seek additional counseling "to
assume the serious responsibilities of Christian marriage."
There are special procedures for teenage marriages and couples with
extraordinary circumstances.Your parish priest will assist you in choosing the liturgy,
readings and music for your wedding day.
