Only the Paul VI Panthers were victorious in last week’s high school
football action.
Paul VI, coached by Pat McGroarty (first season), defeated rival Ireton
33-18 on Sept. 26 under the lights in Fairfax. The "Black and Gold" bolted
to a 19-0 halftime lead and never looked back.
"Our running game was very, very solid tonight. Give junior fullback
Calvin Salter and sophomore tailback Keone Kyle a lot of credit," said
McGroarty.
The Panthers improved to 3-1 (1-0 WCAC) on the young season, after merely
winning one game all of last season.
Ireton, coached by Brian Inman (second season), scored three second half
touchdowns, but it was too little too late. The "Cardinal and Gold" dropped
to 0-4 on the season (3-9 overall in Inman's two seasons).
Salter carried the ball 15 times for 80 yards. Kyle ripped off 171 yards
on 25 carries. He scored two of the Panthers five touchdowns.
Senior wide receiver Drew Bonk also scored one via a superb pass from
senior quarterback Mike Geraghty.
Ireton was paced offensively by sophomore running back Brandon McDonald
and by junior wide receiver Charlie West.
"It was a good game," said McGroarty. "We're looking forward to giving it
our best shot versus undefeated St. John’s this upcoming weekend."
O’Connell Rallies Late, But Loses to Good Counsel
The O'Connell Knights, coached by Steve Trimble (first season), dropped a
28-19 decision to the visiting Good Counsel Falcons Sept. 27 in North
Arlington.
The "Royal Blue and Silver," playing their homecoming game, merely
trailed 14-7 at intermission. However, the Falcons, coached by Bob Milloy,
bolted to a 28-7 advantage early in the fourth quarter, which essentially
put the game out of reach.
The Knights dropped to 2-3 (0-2 WCAC) at the midway point of the regular
season.
Scoring for O'Connell was junior wide receiver Andrew Stockel on TD
receptions of 36 and 55 yards from senior QB Bush Hamdan. Hamdan also added
a 17-yard scoring run.
O'Connell visits DeMatha Oct. 4.
