Paul VI High School, the only diocesan team that could mathematically
finish with a winning record, defeated McNamara 27-19 Oct. 17 to improve to
4-3 overall.
Sophomore running back Keone Kyle scored two first half touchdowns as the
game was tied 13-13 at intermission. Kyle ripped off 287 yards for the game
and has over 900 yards this season.
Junior running back Calvin Salter ran for 65 yards and has 450 yards on
the ground this season.
The "Black and Gold," coached by Pat McGroarty, have made dramatic
strides from the 2002 season when Paul VI merely won one game.
The "Black and Gold" trailed the Mustangs, coached by former Va. Tech
standout defensive lineman Bernard Joseph, 19-13, midway through the third
quarter.
However, senior Panther wide receiver/defensive back Drew Bonk scored the
game’s decisive TD with an artistic 60 yard punt return.
Following junior Mike Armellino's PAT PVI led 20-19. Armellino
successfully converted three of four "Points After Touchdown" on the night.
It was Bonk’s third touchdown of the season.
When Kyle scored in the fourth quarter from one yard out PVI led by the
final margin of 27-19.
Both Bonk and senior corner back Mike Billingsley have excelled at
defensive back this season. Billingsley played Mustang breakaway threat
Randall Steiner tough all day, and kept the wide receiver out of the endzone.
Senior QB/punter Mike Geraghty punted well and has averaged close to 35
yards per punt this season.
Kyle (at defensive end) and junior defensive back Jywanza Queen each
recovered McNamara fumbles.
Two-way senior linemen Joe Gannon and Tim Coogan spearheaded the
Panther’s efforts in the trenches.
"We are very happy to be 4-3 right now. We get the challenge of playing
DeMatha at home this upcoming weekend," said McGroarty.
