FAIRFAX — When Father Charles McCoart was made executive director of Catholic Charities five years ago, he was surprised and overwhelmed by his new assignment. Without the benefit of experience in running a large social service organization, Father McCoart brought his energy and vitality to the agency, and promised to be a "cheerleader" to encourage others in their ministries.

Father McCoart will return to parish ministry in June, where he looks forward again to pastoral work.

Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde expressed his deep appreciation to Father McCoart for his service to Catholic Charities at a farewell luncheon held last week at St. Mary of Sorrows Parish in Fairfax.

"Today’s gathering in your honor is to say thank you. But thank you is not enough," remarked Bishop Loverde. "There are times in life when words fail us. I want to add a big one from the bottom of my heart."

Reminiscing about moments of shared laughter and accomplishment, Catholic Charities employees also expressed their gratitude to Father McCoart.

Quoting an email she received from a co-worker, Associate Director of Childrens’ Services Pat Mudd said, "Father Chuck has consistently demonstrated a unique ability to make individuals in the organization feel extremely valued both as people and for their work. He takes the opportunity to express his gratitude every chance he gets. His ability to empower others is remarkable."

In bidding the agency adieu, Father McCoart said, "I have learned from all of you what it means to be a servant. To care enough to give your life working for the betterment of other people in our community. I know that you would agree with me that at the end of each day, it is we, the servants, who are the ones most ministered to."

"Thank you for loving and caring for and encouraging God’s children. Thank you for loving and caring for and encouraging me. It has been a once in a lifetime privilege to work along side you as we wash feet for God," he added.

Father McCoart will leave his post as executive director officially on June 25.
