The Paul VI Panthers have already matched their win total from last
season. Paul VI, coached by Pat McGroarty (first season), went on the road
and defeated Fork Union 14-7.
The Panthers trailed 7-0 at halftime. But the "Black and Gold" put their
first points of 2003 on the scoreboard when sophomore running back Keone
Kyle scored from 24 yards out, midway through the third quarter.
The ensuing point after attempt was blocked and PVI trailed 7-6.
The Panther defense stiffened down the stretch and kept Fork Union out of
the end zone the entire second half.
With 8:30 remaining in the game, Kyle scored the game winner when he
raced up the middle from nine yards out.
"Our offensive line — senior center Pat Zanelotti, senior guard Pat
Healy, junior guard Kahlil Hall and senior tackles Tim Coogan and Joe Gannon —
blocked real well all game," said senior quarterback/tri-captain Mike
Geraghty.
Geraghty scored the two point conversion to account for the final 14-6
margin.
"It's great to start out with a win. The new coaching staff and the new
system really made a big difference. We want to go out there this year and
make a statement," said Zanelotti.
"Overall, we've really got the heart to go out and do what is necessary
to win this year," said Geraghty.
"Our two running backs - Keone Kyle and junior Calvin Salter — pounded
out over 270 yards on the ground. Senior linebacker Joe Herbert forced a
fumble, and junior defensive end Art Dabney recovered a fumble. It is
exciting to start off on a winning note. The kids are working hard and they
are committed to having a successful season" said McGroarty.
