Theology on Tap, a program that takes the depth of theology to local bars, is once again expanding in the diocese. It began at Whitlow’s on Wilson in Arlington and last year, it added a program in Herndon at Ned Devine’s. This year, it adds Old Town Alexandria to the list, beginning a session at Pat Troy’s Ireland’s Own.

The program is geared toward young adults, ages 21-39, and the talks given address topics that are important to this age range. But why has this event become so popular? Pam Albanese, Director of Young Adult Ministry for the diocese, said, "Theology on Tap is unique in that it meets young adults where they are, in the comfortable setting of their favorite local bar." She described how many young adult Catholics tend to forget about Mass as they live their busy day to day lives. "They never made a conscious decision to stop going, but now that they’ve been away for so long, they feel uncomfortable going back," Albanese said. Theology on Tap is a place where they can be reminded of the Church and be welcomed back.

The talks given also speak to a wide variety of people. Albanese explained that it is "just as pertinent to people who are just coming to the Church for the first time as it is for those who are already practicing their faith." It is also highly regarded for its social perks. "One more undeniable reason that Theology on Tap is so popular is that it’s fun!" Albanese said. Besides the incorporation of faith, it is a good way to meet new people.

The Theology on Tap program originated in the Archdiocese of Chicago and has now spread over the country. In the Arlington Diocese, there have been anywhere from 150 to 300 young adults in attendance per session. It is sponsored by the diocesan Office for Family Life Young Adult Ministry Program.

The scheduled events begin at 7 p.m. with a time for food and drink as well as socializing. At 7:30 p.m., the speaker begins with a talk that usually lasts about a half an hour with time for questions and answers after. Speakers include several diocesan priests, Dr. Lynn Bateman, founder and publisher of Government Counseling, Ltd., Gerri Laird, director of Project Rachel, and Steve Luteran, executive director of Catholic Charities.
