Although the official dedication of the new community center at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Arlington is on Jan. 30, the center’s first real work-out might be Feb. 20 in the form of a faculty-student basketball game. Principal, Sister Benedict Kesock, O.S.B., said this will give her enough time to work on her free throws.

The new community center, which physically links the church and the school, will be dedicated on Jan. 30 by Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde following a 7 p.m. liturgy. That weekend, which also marks the 30th anniversary of Sister Benedict’s presence at the school, will include a polka party and dinner on Saturday, Jan. 31, in the new hall.

Sister Benedict often says that she has waited nearly three decades, outlasted nine pastors and has seen three bishops, all the while hoping that a parish center would become a reality.

Just days after the dedication, students will begin using the state of the art gymnasium for physical ed classes, for recess during inclement weather and for extended day play time.

A combination music and technology room will house the "instructional technology center" for both students and parishioners interested in honing their computer skills.

Next fall, the first floor will house a pre-kindergarten, where mini-toilets have already been installed.

Benedict Hall, on the lower level, will serve as a banquet hall for the school and parish, and for meetings. With a full catering kitchen, the hall will be available for outside rentals, such as wedding receptions, starting in June.

"Sister has a magical ability to choose the right people to work with her," said Gerry Welch, school secretary. "She says she couldn’t do it if she couldn’t so easily delegate with trust. She never begs, and is not comfortable asking for money, so she puts it in God’s hands."
