"Wow."
That was the sentiment expressed by Kathleen Dolan, principal of St. Mary
School in Alexandria, following an assembly to honor her and celebrate her
35 years in the education field. She has been principal at St. Mary School
for six years and served as assistant principal at St. Timothy School in
Chantilly for two years before coming to the Old Town Alexandria School.
Louis Frisenda, assistant principal, contacted the City of Alexandria
several months ago to see if there was any way the city could honor Dolan.
In response to his query, Alexandria Mayor William Eullie visited St. Mary
School to deliver a proclamation to Dolan from the city council. The
proclamation recognized Dolan for her "great and selfless enthusiasm." It
named her as a "shining example for principals everywhere."
"Principals are leaders in schools," Eullie told the group assembled.
"They set directions and make sure you get the best education possible.
"Have respect for principals," Eullie urged the students. "She or he is
the one person you want to have on your side."
A letter from Diocesan Superintendent Dr. Timothy McNiff recognized Dolan
"for the wonderful commitment she has and continues to make for those
children."
The president of the Home and School Association, Maureen McCarty,
presented Dolan with a print created by art teacher Chris Youngbluth,
featuring each of the schools where Dolan has worked in the last 35 years.
Father Dennis Kleinmann, pastor of St. Mary Parish, was also present to
recognize Dolan.
Dolan told the students and staff, "You are my heart. I couldn’t have
done it without you, and wouldn’t have done it without you."
