The Bishop O’Connell Knights, coached by Steve Trimble, broke into the
win column for the first time this season with a convincing 33-15 win versus
archrival Paul VI Oct. 29, in Fairfax.
The Knights led 20-8 at halftime. Mike Ireland scored on a 20-yard
touchdown reception from Tim Sadler, Devon Brown scored on a 10-yard
touchdown run and Andrew Stockel had a 29-yard touchdown reception from
Sadler.
PVI, coached by Pat McGroarty, scored late in the second quarter when
Keone Kyle ripped off a 65-yard scoring jaunt.
The Knights extended their lead in the second half to secure their first
win of the 2004 campaign. O’Connell’s Ireland scored two second half
touchdowns. PVI’s Dabney scored on a 35-yard touchdown reception from D.J.
Mangas.
Knights placekicker Phil Maguire added three of four
point-after-touchdowns on the night. O’Connell came up short on one
two-point attempt.
"The kids played hard. After starting 0-8, they could have kind of packed
it in. They’ve continued to work hard. Friday night at Paul VI they put it
all together. I’m very proud of the kids," said Trimble, whose oldest son,
Jeremy, plays for Coach Bobby Ross at Army.
Ireton, coached by Brian Inman, pummeled Bishop Sullivan 42-0. The
Cardinals (7-1) visit Maret on Nov. 6. A win will guarantee Ireton a berth
in the VIS Playoffs. O’Connell (1-8) hosts McNamara Nov. 6. PVI (1-8) hosts
top-ranked Good Counsel Nov. 5.
