Ten diocesan student-athletes recently were awarded All-WCAC recognition
for their football achievements this past season.
FIRST-TEAM ALL-WCAC: O'Connell senior defensive back Mike Ireland and
Paul VI junior running back Keone Kyle (pictured above).
"Last season, I made second-team All-WCAC as a defensive back. This
season, however, my tackling got a whole lot better. I was also bigger,
faster and stronger this year. As a team, we came together late in the
season. Even though we beat PVI, beating McNamara is probably what I'll
remember the most - because it was "senior’s day" and it was the last time
that our senior class ever played a high school game" said Ireland.
"Give me a hole and I'll run through it," said Kyle. "I try my best 100
percent of the time out there. Walter Payton is my idol and that's who I try
to run like. We finished the season with a disappointing 1-9 season. We had
trouble finishing off games in the second half. We couldn't get the pieces
to the puzzle to fit together this year for some reason".
SECOND-TEAM ALL-WCAC: O'Connell senior offensive lineman Brian
Schoenberger, junior placekicker Phillip Maguire and sophomore running back
Devon Brown; Paul VI senior offensive lineman Khalil Hall.
"During the course of the season, I played left guard, left tackle and
also some right tackle. The team started 0-8, but we won the last two games
of the season versus Paul VI and McNamara. We fought all the way to the end
of the season in order to knock off the Panthers and the Mustangs. We showed
some grit and some mental toughness as a team in the process" said
Schoenberger.
"I mostly played right tackle on the O-line this season," said Hall.
"From junior year to senior year, my hand work on the "O-line" got better
and so did my endurance".
THIRD-TEAM ALL-WCAC: O'Connell senior defensive lineman Mike Brown,
senior wide receiver Andrew Stockel; Panthers senior tight end Artie Dabney
and sophomore running back Alex Soltis.
No Ireton players received honors because the Cardinals do not play a
full WCAC schedule. Ireton, coached by Brian Inman, finished the season with
an 8-2 overall record. O'Connell, coached by Steve Trimble, finished 2-8
overall. Paul VI, coached by Pat McGroarty, finished 1-9 overall).
