The 2004 WCAC Tennis Tournament concluded last week. DeMatha placed first
with 30 team points; Gonzaga (23), O'Connell (22), Good Counsel (nine) and
Ireton (seven) rounded out the top tier. PVI, St. John’s, McNamara and St.
Mary's Ryken rounded out the second tier.
Local achievements included: O'Connell sophomore Jonathan Retta/freshman
Emilio Barajas-Alexander were champions at Doubles #3; O'Connell senior
Nebyu Retta/senior Mani Barajas-Alexander were runnersups at Doubles #1;
O'Connell's Emilio Barajas-Alexander was runnerup at Singles #3; O'Connell's
Jonathan Retta was runnerup at Singles #4; O'Connell freshman Josh Labat was
runnerup at Singles #5; Ireton junior Colin Deyman was runnerup at Singles
#6.
Head coaches Bob Kluba of O'Connell, Mike Hutton of Ireton and Craig Tutt
of Paul VI are not only the boys head coaches in the spring, but are
also the girls’ head coaches in the fall.
