Three of the six diocesan teams finished the season with records
substantially better than .500 led by the O'Connell boys (30-4 overall) and
the Paul VI boys (20-9 overall).
The PVI girls also turned in a successful season, winning the V.I.S.
Championship and finishing well above .500 as well).
In terms of All-WCAC honors, O'Connell's Freddie Stanback was named to
the first-team. Teammates Erik Smith, Marcus Ginyard and Dave Neal were
selected to the second-team along with Paul VI's Ryan Williams. O'Connell's
Ernie Lomax and Paul VI's Darryl Proctor were selected third-team.
O'Connell's Jeremy Trimble, Ireton's Chad Wilson and Daeshawn Branch as
well as Paul VI's David Sanders, Jean Cajou and Danny Sumner were all
selected honorable-mention.
O'Connell's Joe Wootten was selected as coach of the year.
Paul VI's Kendra King was selected second-team All-WCAC. O'Connell's
Shannon Ambrose and Ireton's Becky Fernandes were selected third-team.
Honorable-mention awards went to Paul VI's Victoria Liaros, Sara Vargas and
Scarlett Williams, along with O'Connell's Rylan Chesley and Jackie Tinsley
and Ireton's Allison Goodhart and Chrissy Sborz.
O'Connell Head Coach Fran Vitt will step down after four seasons. The
Lady Knights barely missed the .500 mark, finishing 13-15 overall.
"They have been wonderful kids to work with, the kind of kids that one
would always want to coach," Vitt said. "They were always competitive. There
will be many good memories beyond the wins and the losses."
