The Bishop O'Connell Knights, coached by Joe Wootten (sixth season), won
the prestigious Alhambra Tournament Championship for the third consecutive
season. The three day/eight team tournament was played March 17-19 in
Cumberland, Md.
The Knights defeated Roman Catholic (Philadelphia) 49-39 in the
quarterfinals. Pacing O’Connell was junior Rockwell Moody (13 points/seven
rebounds), senior Dave Neal (22/13 rebounds) and senior Marcus Ginyard
(seven points).
O'Connell defeated Towson Catholic (Baltimore) 66-56 in the semi-finals.
Leading the Knights was Neal (25/12 rebounds), Ginyard (24/seven rebounds)
and freshman Jason Clark (10).
In the championship game, the Knights defeated WCAC rival DeMatha 54-47.
Ginyard (22/12 of 13 free throws), Neal (15) and senior Bryant Majors
(seven/five of six free throws) paced O’Connell.
"After losing to DeMatha in the recent WCAC Championship Game, it was
great to get our third Alhambra title," said Majors.
Majors, Neal and Ginyard concluded their four-year varsity careers as the
most decorated class in O'Connell history, including a four-year win/loss
total of 116-19. The Knights finished 31-3 this season.
Neal was selected the tournament MVP. Ginyard was selected as the
tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
"These three players have been a huge part of this program. They are
talented and they have been very team oriented," said Wootten.
Other teams participating in the tournament included: Mount St. Joseph’s
(Baltimore), Newman Goretti and St. Joseph’s Prep (both from Philadelphia)
and host Bishop Walsh (Cumberland, Md.).
