Some of the 2005 fall season highlights included all three diocesan football teamsfinishing with identical 5-5 records.

For Bishop O'Connell High School (2-8 in '04) and Paul VI Catholic High School (1-9 in '04), the 2005 season was a definite improvement. O'Connell junior running back Devon Brown, coached by Steve Trimble, finished the season with over 1,500 yards rushing.

Paul VI head coach Pat McGroarty finished as WCAC Coach of the Year in a ballot of his peers.

For Bishop Ireton High School (8-3 in '04), this season was somewhat of a setback. Ireton senior defensive linemen Eddie Pitts and Willis Vann turned in excellent seasons, following the footsteps of just-graduated Buddy Buckner and Mark Wu (class of '05), who led Ireton to the VIS semifinals one season ago. Ireton was coached by Brian Inman.

In girls’ soccer, Ireton defeated Paul VI in the WCAC quarterfinals and O'Connell in the WCAC semifinals. In the Championship Match, the Lady Cardinals, coached by Chris Ryan (WCAC Coach of the Year), were knocked off by St. John’s College High School in Washington.

Despite the loss to Ireton, perennial powerhouse O'Connell was still ranked in the top-20 of the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Knights were coached by Alberto Starace.

In volleyball, O'Connell advanced to the WCAC semifinals. The Lady Knights, coached by Michael Barnett, dropped their semifinal match to Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, Md., but nonetheless had a very solid season.

Senior setter Gemma Donovan was selected First-Team All-WCAC.

In the Virginia State Catholic School Cross Country Championships (in Newport News), Ireton senior Rob Sagar won the boys title.

In addition, Ireton sophomore Julianne Tela won the girls title and also Ireton sophomore Michelle Hopke won the girls JV title. The Cardinals were coached by Rich McCoppin.
