In diocesan football action, Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax defeated Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington 33-6 to improve to 4-3 overall on the season. The Panthers, coached by Pat McGroarty, improved to 2-2 overall in the competitive WCAC (wins against the Lions as well as against the St. John’s College High School Cadets).

O'Connell absorbed a 47-13 beating at the hands of the Our Lady of Good Counsel in Wheaton, Md., Falcons to drop to 4-3 overall on the season. The Knights, coached by Steve Trimble, dropped to 2-2 in the WCAC (wins versus the Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Md., Mustangs and versus the Carroll Lions).

Ireton traveled to Richmond and was soundly beaten by St. Christopher 39-7. After the conclusion of the game, it was a quiet bus ride up I-95 for the Cardinals, who had hoped to position themselves for the state playoffs.

Entering the St. Christopher game, Ireton was ranked fifth in the state in their classification (the top four will qualify for the playoffs). Dropping the contest to St. Christopher was obviously a jolt to the Cardinals post-season prospects. Independent Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria dropped to 3-4 overall.

Paul VI is scheduled to host McNamara Oct. 21 and Good Counsel Oct. 28. O'Connell will travel to St. John’s Oct. 22 and will host Gonzaga College High School in Washington Oct. 29.

Ireton will visit Riverdale Baptist High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., Oct. 22 and then does not play again until Nov. 5 when it hosts Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia.
