PVI Girls Advance to Championship Game

The Paul VI Lady Panthers, coached by Joe Danneman (third season), will attempt to win their second WCAC Lacrosse Title in the past 24 months. The Panthers currently have overall record of 12-5.

PVI is the only diocesan lacrosse team to advance beyond the quarter-final round. The Panthers will play Good Counsel for the 2005 WCAC Lacrosse Title May 17(too late for this edition).

In the WCAC semi-finals May 12, PVI thwarted St. John’s 11-6 in Fairfax. The Panthers led 8-2 at halftime and took the suspense out of the contest.

Scoring for the "Black and Gold" was Marie Zapolski, Kathleen Berger and Bonnie Hansen (three goals each); Victoria Velesz and Maggie Bridges each tallied one goal. In addition, B. Hansen added two assists, and M. Zapolski, Katie Doherty, Caroline Lamberti and Carrie Palmisano all added one assist each.

In the WCAC quarter-finals May 9, PVI defeated Elizabeth Seton 11-4 in Fairfax.

For the seasson: Zapolski - 37 goals, Hansen - 25, Velesz - 22, Berger - 19 and DePont - 13 - lead the Lady Panthers in scoring.

Bridges - 49, Noonan - 46, Berger - 41, Doherty - 34 and Hansen - 34 - lead the "Black and Gold" in ground balls).

Goalkeeper Ashley Dawson has recorded 93 saves on the season.

The Panthers defeated Ireton in 2003 for the WCAC Championship. PVI dropped a semi-final contest in 2004 to Good Counsel.

"The key to this years Championship will be winning the "draw controls" and staying patient on offense" said coach Danneman.

The PVI, O'Connell and Ireton boys, as well as the O'Connell and Ireton girls, all lost in the quarter-finals.

In addition to the PVI-Good Counsel title game, Gonzaga was scheduled to play DeMatha for the 2005 boys’ lacrosse title.
