Herald Staff Report
(From the issue of 8/18/05)

The Virginia Shamrocks, coached by Tommy Orndorff, defeated the Arizona Hotshots 3-1 on Aug. 14 to win the 18-and-under ASA Gold National tournament in Salinas, Calif. The Shamrocks, composed of players from the greater Washington area, won all seven games in the tournament and outscored their opponents 25-5.

Orndorff, who has taken the Shamrocks to the national tournament every year since 1977, coaches the varsity softball team at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington in the spring. He said the Shamrocks are the first East coast team to win the tournament, which is traditionally dominated by teams from California.

The Shamrocks were led by Courtney Bures (Stonewall Jackson), Jenny Clohan (Broad Run) and Megan Elliott (Calvert).
