The Bishop O'Connell Knights indoor track team has posted some
outstanding times and marks thus far during the indoor season. The Knights,
led by co-head coaches Gerry Llames and Cindy Walls, comprise the braintrust
during the indoor season. Head football coach Steve Trimble runs the program
during the outdoor season in the spring.
"The indoor season is developmental," said Llames. "Everything is geared
toward getting the guys and the girls ready for the spring season."
"Indoor track is very good training for the spring. I've really enjoyed
working with all of the girls thus far this season," said Walls.
Several dozen student-athletes are participating in winter track for the
"Royal Blue and Silver." This article will feature some of those that have
turned in the most outstanding times/marks thus far.
For the girls, senior Christine Walls, one of the WCAC's top cross
country runners, leads the Knights’ distance efforts. Walls has turned in a
solid 3:21.20 in the 1000 meters and has also turned in a solid 5:40:33 in
the 1600 meters this season.
"Christine's work ethics are impeccable. She is also very disciplined and
focused," said Cindy Walls.
Senior Nina Benedicto has turned in an excellent throw of 35'04" in the
shot put. "Nina is strong and she has great technique and form. She has won
every meet that she has participated in this season," said Walls.
Sophomore Allison Pont has high jumped 4'10" during the current indoor
season and also high jumped 5'during last year’s outdoor season (her
freshman year). "Allison has a lot of natural talent and some real
potential. She is also a member of the 4 x 400 relay team as well," said
Walls.
Senior Cat Moynihan (55 meter hurdles), junior Meredith McDonough (55
meters), sophomore Audrey Beccles (55 meters) and sophomore Ashlee Christ(55
meters) - have also contributed to the Knights efforts thus far this season.
"Cat (Moynihan) and Christine (Walls) are the leaders of the team in
terms of leadership. Cat is also a very hard worker," said Walls.
"I've really admired all of the girls willingness to work in the cold
weather conditions and their desire to improve their times and their marks,"
she added.
For the boys, senior Mark DeWine, WCAC Cross Country Champion, leads the
Knights’ distance efforts during the indoor season. DeWine turned in an
excellent 4:45.21 in the 1600 earlier this season.
"Mark takes his running seriously.," said Llames. "He has been working
hard." Junior Mark Tynan has run the 1600 in a respectable 5:11.90. "Mark
has very good potential. He's coming off of an ankle injury that he suffered
during the cross country season," said Llames.
Sophomore Patrick Otthofer has turned in an excellent 19'04" in the long
jump and a 37'05" in the triple jump. During Otthofer's freshman season, he
turned in an outstanding 40'04" in the triple jump.
Freshman George Llames has turned in a respectable 5'06" in the high
jump. "Unfortunately George has recently injured his knee. He's got a good
bit of talent," said his father.
Freshman Mark Chauteh has recently turned in an outstanding 42.50 in the
300 meters. "Mark has the ability to finish a race strong. We're trying to
work on the overall mental part of the race," said Llames.
Freshman Basil Wilson has turned in a solid 7.26 in the 55 meters and a
very solid 44.6 in the 300 meters. "Basil will continue to improve," said
coach Llames.
"We've got a lot of younger kids out for the team. It's a good situation
here at O'Connell being able to develop the younger kids (that have 2-3 more
years of eligibility remaining)," said Llames.
