Four current diocesan student athletes recently participated in post-season basketball tournaments.

On April 22 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Pope Paul VI's Artie Dabney and Bishop Ireton's Chad Wilson squared off against one another in the preliminary game of the 2005 Capital Classic.

Bishop O'Connell's Dave Neal and Marcus Ginyard (pictured above) later suited up for the "Capital All-Stars" in the featured game of the "2005 Capital Classic."

In the "preliminary game," Paul VI’s Dabney played for the District squad, while Ireton’s Wilson played on the Suburban squad.

Dabney's team ended up defeating Wilson's team 107-102, in a contest that featured more offense than defense.

Dabney (undecided regarding college) averaged nearly 11 points and six rebounds per game during the regular season for Panther head coach Levi Franklin.

During the April 22 contest, Dabney contributed eight points, five rebounds, two blocks, two steals and two assists in a mere 14 minutes of playing time.

Wilson (undecided regarding college) averaged nearly 16 points and five assists per game during the regular season for Cardinal Head coach Chuck Driesell. In the all-star game, Wilson had three points, four assists and three rebounds in 16 minutes of playing time.

Both Neal and Ginyard suited up for the "Capital All-Stars" in the featured game versus the "USA All-Stars." The local all-stars dropped a 123-97 decision to the U.S. team.

Neal, who will play collegiately at the University of Maryland for Coach Gary Williams, averaged nearly 20 points and 10 rebounds per game this season for Knight Head Coach Joe Wootten.

In the prestigious contest at GMU, Neal scored eight points, collected seven rebounds, dished out four assists and recorded three steals in 19 minutes of play.

Ginyard, who will play collegiately at North Carolina for Coach Roy Williams, shattered the all-time O'Connell record with 298 career steals and capped off his high school career having been named "Virginia State Gatorade Player of the Year."

In April 22 game, Ginyard scored 13 points, collected four rebounds, dished out four assists and recorded four steals in 24 minutes.

Under Wootten’s tutelage, Neal and Ginyard led the Knights to their best four-year win percentage ever with a record of 116-19.
