In Football, Paul VI’s McGroarty Named Coach of the Year

Twenty-one diocesan male student athletes and one coach earned post-season football conference honors.

Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax head coach Pat McGroarty was named Coach of the Year. "Any time that one gets coach of the year, it is also a tribute to your players," he said. "You only get that award when the players that you put on the field perform."

Paul VI offensive lineman Dan Matheny, quarterback D.J. Mangas and linebacker Sean O'Neill were named to the first team.

Named to the first team from Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington were running back Devon Brown, linebacker Corey Jackson, defensive back Jordan Trimble and placekicker Phil Maguire.

PVI running back Alex Soltis and wide receiver/kick returner Zach Costello captured second team honors, as did O'Connell offensive lineman Nicholas Kaminski and linebacker Eddie Washington.

PVI offensive lineman Mark McDonald, defensive lineman Josh Gadell, wide receiver Daryl Spencer and defensive back Zach Miller were named to the third team. O'Connell defensive back Emani Fenton also made the third team.

DeMatha Defeats Good Counsel Again

In the WCAC Title Game Nov. 20 DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Md., defeated Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, Md., 21-20 in overtime in Annapolis.

Good Counsel, coached by Bob Milloy, led 7-0 and 14-7 after the first two quarters respectively. But DeMatha, coached by Bill McGregor, tied the contest at 14 apiece in the latter stages of the fourth quarter.

The Good Counsel Falcons lost the overtime coin flip and proceeded on offense first in the extra period. A spectacular pass play from quarterback Zach Ingle to wide receiver Drew Gloster gave the Falcons a 20-14 lead, but the extra point attempt clanged off the left upright.

The DeMatha Stags scored when wide receiver Kenny Tate scored on a reverse. Matt Campbell added the point after touchdown to give DeMatha a come-from-behind 21-20 victory.
