Nineteen diocesan student-athletes earned WCAC soccer honors for
their accomplishments this past season.
First-Team: Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlingon senior midfielder
Steve Renner and junior striker Tom St. George; Bishop Ireton High School in
Alexandria senior defender Mike Brideau and Paul VI Catholic High School in
Fairfax senior midfielder Steve Brooks.
"We started the season off a little bit slow," said St. George, who led
all diocesan players with 22 goals. "We had some injuries that hurt.
However, we peaked at the end of the season and made a real good showing
late in the season."
Second-Team: Ireton junior midfielder Chris Campbell and Paul VI senior
striker Matt Hardy, as well as Paul VI junior midfielder Dominique DaCruz.
Third-Team: O'Connell senior defender Tom Finley and Paul VI senior
defender Pat Ferraris, as well as Paul VI junior midfielder Donald Hart.
Honorable-Mention: O'Connell senior defenders Alex Jones and Patrick
Manion, and senior midfielder Luis Zavala; Ireton senior defender Matt Hopke,
junior defender Greg DiMaggio and junior striker Brian Dauer; Paul VI senior
defender Shane Zavala, senior striker Max Benzinger and junior midfielder
Kevin Kodadek.
"We won 10 games this year," said Ireton’s Hopke. "We turned the season
around when we defeated Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington 2-0
late in the year. After that match, we also defeated O'Connell, Paul VI and
St. John’s College High School in Washington during the regular season."
"One of our big wins was defeating O'Connell 5-3 during the regular
season," said Paul VI’s Kodadek. "We will graduate a lot of seniors, but we
should still be able to go pretty far next year."
Kodadek will be one of the Panthers’ top wrestlers for head coach John
Welcher.
In addition, Ireton head coach Dave Edwards was selected as WCAC Coach of
the Year. O'Connell was coached by Chuck LaPorte and Paul VI was coached by
Enzo Aldunate.
