Bishop O’Connell High School junior forward Liz Carroll (pictured at
right) was selected first-team All Met by The Washington Post.
In addition to Carroll, 12 other Arlington diocesan student athletes were
recognized by the Post for their fall sports accomplishments. They
are: (second team): Bishop Ireton High School senior striker Krissy
Vornadore — soccer; (honorable mention): Paul VI Catholic High School senior
midfielder Kelly Semko, and O'Connell juniors Aly Pont (goalkeeper) and Kika
Toulouse (midfielder) — soccer; O'Connell senior midfielder Steve Renner and
junior striker Tom St. George — soccer. Ireton senior Rob Sagar — boys cross
country; O'Connell senior Gemma Donovan — girls’ volleyball; Paul VI seniors
Dan Matheny (two-way lineman) and Sean O'Neil (linebacker), as well as
Panther junior quarterback D.J. Mangas — football; and O'Connell senior
placekicker Phil Maguire — football.
For some inexplicable reason, O'Connell junior running back Devon Brown,
with over 1,500 rushing yards on the season, was not selected.
Ireton Girls Win Visitation Tournament
The Bishop Ireton High School girls’ basketball team, coached by Mike
Hutton, won the "Georgetown Visitation Invitational Tournament" last
weekend.
In the three-day tournament, Ireton defeated Notre Dame of Philadelphia,
59-55 (OT) in the quarterfinals; St. Annes Belfield of Charlottesville 55-36
in the semifinals; and Elizabeth Seton of Prince George's County (WCAC foe)
46-37 in the championship game.
With the win, Ireton improved to 7-2 overall and is in position to
compete for the "middle tier" of the competitive WCAC.
Ireton’s four-year starting guard Becky Fernandes was selected Tournament
MVP. Fernandes, who played freshman and sophomore year for Marty Goodhart
and junior and senior year for Mike Hutton poured in 51 points during the
three games.
Junior Ali Cleaves chipped in 31 and sophomore Rachel Martin added 22
over the three games.
The Ireton boys, coached by Chuck Driesell (also second season), won the
inaugural "Bishop Ireton Invitational Tournament."
In the four-team tournament, Ireton defeated Barrie School of Suburban
Maryland 74-41 in the semifinals. Senior forward Andy Burns (14 points),
junior forward Shane Walker and freshman guard Javorn Farrell (both 13),
senior guard Matt Sagar (10) and sophomore point guard Tucker Lucas (seven)
— paced the Cardinals attack.
In the championship game, the Cardinals defeated KIMA (Charter School) of
Washington, D.C., 64-63.
Junior post Mike Williams pulled down 13 rebounds and added 19 points en
route to being named the "Tournament MVP."
Sophomore point guard Tucker Lucas also added 10 points in the
championship game victory.
In their most recent game on Dec. 16, Ireton dropped a 62-59 contest to
visiting Bishop McNamara High School in Maryland. Thus, the Cardinals start
their 2006 WCAC schedule with a 0-1 record in the challenging league.
