Both the Ireton and the Paul VI tennis teams turned in respectable seasons. Ireton, coached by Steve Pfeifer (first season), finished the season with an overall record of 7-5. The "Cardinal and Gold" defeated both McNamara and St. Mary’s Ryken twice each (by the scores of 9-0). In addition, Ireton defeated Paul VI 8-1 and 7-2, as well as Good Counsel 5-4.

The senior-laden Cardinal squad was paced by seniors Colin Deyman (singles #1), H.B. Choe (#2), Brian Samson (#3), Dave Maiers (#4), Jeff Papin (#5) and junior Russell Whitham (#6).

"Our first four players just barely missed the .500 mark on the season," said Pfeifer.

Jeff (Papin) finished the regular season with a 9-2 mark, and finished 10-3 overall after getting to the semi-finals of the WCAC Tournament. Russell (Whitham) finished the regular season with an 11-0 mark, and finished 13-1 after finishing as WCAC Tournament Runner-up. In addition, Colin (Deyman) won the Cardinal Award for being the team leader and Russell (Whitham) won the MVP Award.

During the season, Deyman and Sampson teamed up in Doubles #1 and Choe and Maiers teamed up in doubles #2. In addition, junior Chris Prescott and sophomore Andrew Ryan teamed up in doubles #3.

"We're going to have a tough time next season replacing our seven seniors also Jessie Colley and Matt Currie - who played intermittently), but we'll have to rely on underclassmen such as Whitham, Prescott and Ryan, as well as Curtis Ranney, Alex Cruz, David Habib and Michael McJury," said Pfeifer.

Paul VI, coached by Ellen Horan (first season), finished the '05 season with an overall record of 4-8. The "Black and Gold" defeated McNamara twice (9-0 and 8-1) and also defeated St. Marys Ryken twice (7-2 and 7-2).

The young Panther squad was paced by: junior Johnny Ritzert (singles #1), junior Greg Pesce (#2), senior team captain Johnny Ong (#3), junior Ryan Eu (#4), sophomore Tim Horan (coaches son) (#5) and junior Andrew Phung (#6).

Pesce led the Panthers with a .500 record on the regular season, and the other five players followed closely behind with records just below .500.

During the season, Pesce and Ong teamed up at doubles #1; Ritzert and Eu teamed up at doubles #2. In addition, Horan and junior Tim Kerrigan teamed up at doubles #3.

Ritzert and Eu advanced to the semi-finals in the recent WCAC Tournament.

"I was very encouraged by the number of boys that tried out for the team this season. We were able to field both a varsity and a junior varsity. We are very encouraged and we feel that we should be very competitive next season (with all of the returning players)," said Horan.
