Former Herald Employee Carol Tuttle Dies

Herald Staff Report
(From the issue of 2/17/05)

Carol J. Tuttle, former bookkeeper, advertising assistant and proofreader for the Arlington Catholic HERALD, died suddenly Feb. 7 at her home in Falls Church. She was 67.

A native of Michigan, Tuttle graduated from Redford High School in 1956. She took some undergraduate classes at the University of Michigan before moving to the Washington area in the early 1960s.

After marrying and raising six children, Tuttle began working as a part-time bookkeeper at the HERALD in 1984. She gradually assumed a full-time position in the advertising department as a graphic artist. She was instrumental in the paper’s transition to computerization in the late 1980s by helping to develop a software program that tracked advertising insertions and billing.

Tuttle "retired" briefly in 1994, but returned to work at the HERALD in 1995 as a proofreader and editorial assistant, a position she held until her second retirement in 2001. She helped develop and shape the two largest issues in the paper’s history in 1999 — the installation issue for Bishop Paul S. Loverde and the 25th anniversary issue of the Arlington Diocese.

"Carol was a tireless worker who was always willing to tackle the thankless jobs," said HERALD editor Michael F. Flach. "She had a terrific grasp of grammar and punctuation, as well as a thorough understanding of the Catholic faith. That combination made her one of the best proofreaders we ever had.

"Her Catholic faith and her family were the most important things in her life," Flach said. "I’m thankful that Carol was an integral part of our HERALD family for 17 years. Her professionalism is still felt in every department. She made all of us better Catholic journalists."

Tuttle is survived by her husband, Eric; four sons, Frederic, John, Andrew and Paul; two daughters, Catherine and Ann-Marie Pacia; her mother, Catherine Anderson; four sisters, Nancy Richardson, Joan Anderson, Mary Tanner and Debra Peddycoart; and eight grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was offered Feb. 11 at St. James Church in Falls Church by Father Frederick Edlefsen, parochial vicar. Fathers Robert Cilinski and Paul Grankauskas concelebrated. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Project Rachel of the Arlington Diocese, 200 N. Glebe Rd., Suite 814, Arlington, Va. 22203.
