Diocesan Capital Campaign Reaches $75 Million Mark
Special to the HERALD
(From the Issue of 8/3/06)
The Diocese of Arlington’s “Rooted in Faith ~ Forward
in Hope” capital campaign reached the $75 million mark for payments
received this week, representing over 65 percent of the $114 million
pledged.
“We have reached a milestone in our diocese’s first-ever
capital campaign. The generous contributions of over 30,000 parishioners
are already making a concrete difference in our parishes and communities.
Our Catholic faithful can be proud of their commitment to meeting
the needs of the future,” said Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde.
The fulfillment of all pledges from the campaign is essential to the
completion of the planned capital projects. The campaign includes
funding for parish projects, Catholic school scholarships, Catholic
Charities, youth ministry, religious education, a priests’ retirement
home, spirituality center and seed money for two new Catholic high
schools. To date, campaign pledges have made possible:
• $25 million (of a total of over $44 million) to benefit parish
projects;
• Initial site clearing for a new Catholic high school in Prince
William County on the Cherry Hill peninsula; groundbreaking for the
school, which is planned to open in Fall 2008, will take place Sept.
6;
• $500,000 for upcoming renovations to the Catholic Charities’
Christ House, a homeless shelter in Alexandria;
• Over half of the $20 million dollars pledged for endowments
is currently being used to strengthen Catholic schools as well as
pastoral ministries and programs.
Begun in 2002, the five-year capital campaign is the diocese’s
response to the extraordinary growth in the 21 counties encompassed
by the diocese, which has seen a 40 percent increase in Catholic population
in the past decade alone. More information on the campaign –
including an overview of projects funded by the campaign’s case
statement – is available online at www.arlingtondiocese.org
