(From the Issue of 12/14/06)

Bishop O’Connell graduate Kate Ziegler broke two more American records over the weekend at the Tom Dolan Invitational. The meet was held at Jim McKay Natatorium on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax.
The 18-year-old Ziegler, who graduated from O’Connell in 2006, broke her own record in the 1000-yard freestyle Dec. 10 with a time of 9:21.57. It lowered her previous record of 9:24.80 by over three seconds, which she set at the same meet last year. The 2005 swim broke the 16-year-old standard of 9:25.49 set by Janet Evans in 1989 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Ziegler now owns all three American distance records previously held by Evans. She set the 1650-yard free standard Dec. 7 at the Tom Dolan Invitational. She set the 500-yard free record in February 2006 at the Washington Metropolitan High School Championships in Germantown, Md.
Ziegler, who is a freshman at George Mason University, came close to lowering the 500 record on Saturday when she swam a 4:34.07, less than a second off her record time of 4:33.35.
