In the recent girls’ WCAC Basketball playoffs, ninth-seeded O'Connell hit the road Feb. 21 and dropped a 59-39 contest to eighth-seeded Ireton. The "play-in" loss ended O'Connell's season.
Ireton, coached by Mike Hutton, advanced to the WCAC quarterfinals where they dropped a competitive 52-39 contest to top-seeded Good Counsel Feb. 23 at Gallaudet University.
The Lady Falcons, coached by Tom Splaine, led the Cardinals 27-16 at intermission. Good Counsel outscored Ireton 25-23 over the games final 16 minutes.
Pacing Ireton offensively was junior Mary Cate Curry (14), junior Rachel Martin (13), senior Allie Cleaves (eight) and senior Marie Donahue (four).
The Cardinals (12-17 overall) were scheduled host St. Catherine’s of Richmond Feb. 27 in a VIS first-round game.
Fifth-seeded Paul VI dropped a 64-37 contest to surging fourth-seeded St.
John’s in the WCAC quarter-finals round. The Cadets are coached by Eddie Simpson. The contest was also played Feb. 23 at Gallaudet.
The Lady Panthers trailed 33-11 at halftime and were outscored 31-26 over the game’s final 16 minutes.
PVI, coached by Scott Allen, was paced by freshman Blair Koniszewski (nine), junior Shanna Suttington (seven), sophomore Shavonne Ducket (six) and senior Rebecca Grimes (four).
The Panthers (16-11 overall) were scheduled to host Hampton Roads Academy Feb. 27 in a VIS first-round game.
