Open House Programs Scheduled for Prospective Teachers
HERALD Staff Report
(From the Issue of 1/11/07)
The diocese’s Office of Catholic Schools is sponsoring a series
of open house programs for prospective teachers during Catholic Schools
Week.
The programs will be conducted by Sister Patricia Helene, I.H.M.,
former assistant superintendent of schools in Arlington and now director
of the Catholic School Leadership Program at Marymount University,
and Ellen K. Hayes, assistant for professional education personnel
for the Office of Catholic Schools.
With the growth of the diocese, good teachers and administrators,
committed to Christ and to sound moral principles, as well as to academic
excellence, are needed to help the diocese’s 44 schools to carry
out their mission.
The schools provide educational opportunities for students from preschool
through high school. Six new diocesan elementary schools have opened
in the past 10 years, and a new diocesan high school will open in
Prince William County in the fall of 2008.
The open house programs will allow attendees to explore the benefits
of teaching in a Catholic school, and to learn about the requirements
for teaching. The open house programs are meant to encourage those
who have previously taught to think about returning to teaching, and
to give teachers in other school systems a chance to find out more
about diocesan schools. Those who may be exploring a career change
are also encouraged to attend.
Many parents of students teach in the diocese’s schools.
Three schools in different areas of the diocese will host open houses.
One session is scheduled during evening hours.
The programs will be offered at the following locations:
St. Thomas More Cathedral School, 105 N. Thomas St., Arlington, Jan.
29, 7–9 p.m.; St. Francis of Assisi School, 18825 Fuller Heights
Rd., Triangle, Jan. 30, 10 a.m.-noon; and All Saints School, 9294
Stonewall Rd., Manassas, Feb. 1, 10 a.m.-noon.
Registration is not required.
