FALLS CHURCH — The community of St. James School in Falls Church celebrated the centennial of the school with a tree planting, a poem by eighth-grader Joanna Borman, and music by the school band and choir.
“Grace and peace be yours as we celebrate with gratitude 100 years of blessings,” said Sister Mary Anne Sweeney, I.H.M., school principal.
“Growing from a tiny shoot of humble beginnings in 1906, St. James School is now sturdy and strong,” said the principal at the ceremony. “Our beautiful school with its devoted religious and lay faculties has nurtured the mind and fed the soul of generations of children in Falls Church.”
St. James Parish pastor, Father Patrick Posey, blessed a maple tree next to the church, and Bob Ryan, chief meteorologist from Channel 4, was the guest speaker.
At the conclusion of the ceremony students sang a special “Hundredth anniversary school song.”
The school has over 600 students representing 30 countries in grades kindergarten through eighth. The Sisters of the Immaculate of Mary have administered the school since 1923.
