Georgetown Prep, Good Counsel Take Home Swimming Gold

Two Washington area teams took first place last weekend at the 72nd annual National Catholic High School Swimming Championships at Villanova University. The talent and depth of Georgetown Prep (boys) and Good Counsel (girls) were too much for the rest of the competitive field.
On the girls’ side, Bishop O’Connell High School of Arlington finished fourth overall (258 points), Paul VI Catholic High School of Fairfax placed sixth (119) and Seton School in Manassas was 10th (61). Oakcrest School in McLean, competing in its first year of varsity swimming, finished 12th (53). On the boys’ side, Bishop O’Connell placed 10th (92 points), PVI was 11th (74.5) and Seton School tied for 13th (39).
Good Counsel senior Colleen Haase was named female swimmer of the meet. She set meet records in the 100 breast (1:02.86) and 200 IM (2:07.27). Her teammate, senior Megan Waters, won both her individual events (50 free and 100 free). Mount St. Joseph junior Ryan Shea earned top honors on the boys’ side. Georgetown Prep placed four swimmers in the top 10: Brady Fox, Josh Hafkin, Andrew Relihan and Robert Grimmett-Norris.
The O’Connell girls placed three swimmers in the top 10 overall. Junior Caitlin Marsilii led the way with 40 points. She won both the 500 free (5:05.10) and 200 free (1:55.59). Junior Maggie Macedonia tied for seventh with 33 points. She placed second in the 200 IM (2:11.08) and third in the 100 breast (1:09.18). Sophomore Kayla O’Malley tied for 10th with 31 points. She was fourth in the 200 free (1:56.88) and third in the 100 fly (59.41).
PVI’s Tana King also tied for 10th overall. She placed third in the 50 free (25.13) and fourth in the 100 free (55.25).
Seton junior Nevin Cook had an outstanding individual meet on the boys’ side. He was fourth overall with 35 points. He placed fourth in the 200 IM (1:59.05) and first in the 100 breast (58.53).
O’Connell’s 200 medley relay team of Hilary Fritz, Maggie Macedonia, Kayla O’Malley and Anna Macedonia placed first (1:51.10). PVI’s relay team of Natalie Fritz, Natalie Matheny, Mo Hummel and Melissa Bartoletta was sixth (1:57.07). Seton’s squad of Jessica Dunn, Mary-Kate Kenna, Lea Mazzoccoli and Alex Doonis was eighth (1:58.71). Oakcrest (Kellie Chang, Sarah Kenis, Elizabeth Kenis and Kathryn Galland) was 10th (2:01.23).
On the boys’ side, O’Connell’s medley relay team of Matt Shannon, Brian Schmitt, Michael Flach and Sean Bourne was sixth (1:40.72) and set a school record in the process. PVI’s squad (Alex Spina, Stpehn Huether, Kevin Chauvin and Miguel Puentes) finished ninth (1:43.89) and Seton (Daniel Koehr, Nevin Cook, Connor Cook and Billy Corkery) was 16th (1:52.21).
PVI senior Thomas Hale-Kupiec finished 10th in the 200 free (1:48.35) and eighth in the 500 free (5:06.27). Pat Lytle tied for 12th in the 50 free (22.46) and was 15th in the 100 free (50.11). The 200 free relay squad (Lytle, Ben Wilson, Stephen Huether and Puentes) finished ninth (1:31.42) and the 400 free relay (Lytle, Hale-Kupiec, Wilson and Chauvin) was 10th (3:22.34).
For the PVI girls, Melissa Bartoletta was 13th in the 50 free (26.11) and Mo Hummel was 13th in the 100 fly (1:04.42). The 200 free relay (Kat McKinstry, Matheny, Mallory Lutz and King) finished fifth (1:44.33). The 400 free relay (McKinstry, Bartoletta, Lutz and King) finished sixth (3:48.17).
For the Seton girls, Jessica Dunn was seventh in the 200 IM (2:17.16) and sixth in the 100 back (1:02.63). The 200 free relay team (Dunn, Mazzoccoli, Doonis and Meghan Moorch) finished 10th (1:46.91).
Oakcrest’s Sarah Kenis was 13th in the 200 IM (2:19.86). Kellie Chang was fifth in the 100 fly (1:01.36) and 10th in the 100 back (1:03.17). Elizabeth Kenis was 11th in the 100 fly (1:03.53). The 400 free relay team (Elizabeth Kenis, Kathryn Galland, Sarah Kenis and Chang) finished 13th (3:57.96).
For the O’Connell boys, senior Brian Schmitt was sixth in the 50 free (22.04) and eighth in the 100 breast (1:02.54). Sophomore Michael Flach finished 13th in the 200 IM (2:03.31) and 11th in the 500 free (4:56.57). Junior Matt Shannon was 13th in the 100 back (57.08) and 15th in the 100 fly (56.55). The 200 free relay team (Schmitt, Shannon, Flach and Bourne) finished eighth (1:31.47) and the 400 free relay squad (David Baurenfend, J.P. Reilly, Keefer Font and John Henry Meckley was 15th (3:40.41).
On the girls’ side, O’Connell’s Hilary Fritz finished 10th (2:15.91) in the 200 IM and first in the 100 back (59.77). Her backstroke time was a school record. Anna Macedonia was fifth in the 50 free (25.54) and ninth in the 100 back (1:02.20). Lucy Tamberino was 12th in the 100 back (1:03.93). Freshman Elizabeth Kilgallin was 16th in the 100 breast (1:13.59). The 200 free relay team (Fritz, Marsilii, Katie Gentsch and Anna Macedonia) finished sixth (1:44.37). The 400 free relay (O’Malley, Marsilii, Nicole Evans and Maggie Macedonia) placed third (3:42.88).
