O’Connell’s Caitlin Marsilii Finds It’s Her Time to Shine

HERALD Staff Report
(From the Issue of 2/15/07)

For two years Bishop O’Connell junior Caitlin Marsilii quietly established herself as one of the Washington area’s premier high school distance swimmers. She gained little notoriety, however, thanks to the large shadow cast by fellow O’Connell teammate and American record holder Kate Ziegler.
Ziegler graduated in 2006, leaving Marsilii to carry the distance torch. She has not disappointed Head Coach Evan Stiles. Marsilii won both the 500 free (5:01.42) and 200 free (1:54.13) at last weekend’s Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swimming and Diving League (WMPSSDL) championships held at George Mason University in Fairfax. Two weeks ago she won the same events at the National Catholic High School Swimming Championships at Villanova University. She undoubtedly will be one of the favorites at next week’s Metro Championships at the Germantown Aquatic Center.
Marsilii won the individual high point award for women (40 points) at last weekend's meet. O’Connell junior Maggie Macedonia tied for second (37); Ireton freshman Alina Hall tied for ninth (32); O’Connell junior Hilary Fritz and senior Kristin Fimian tied for 13th (30); O’Connell sophomore Kayla O’Malley (24) tied for 22nd; and O’Connell junior Anna Macedonia (23) was 24th.
Marsilii also was part of the victorious 400 free relay team that helped propel the O’Connell girls to a second-place finish overall (323.5 points). Good Counsel (404) took the girls’ title once again. Bishop Ireton (126) finished seventh, while Paul VI (117) placed eighth.
On the boys’ side, Georgetown Prep (439.5) edged out Gonzaga to win the title. Ireton (184) was fourth, PVI (163) placed sixth and O’Connell (147) was seventh. Only three diocesan swimmers finished in the top 25 overall: Ireton senior Michael Dickerson (29 points) was 14th; PVI senior Thomas Hale-Kupiec (25) tied for 20th; and O’Connell sophomore Michael Flach (23) tied for 23rd.
