VATICAN CITY — To mark Pope John Paul II's 25th anniversary in October,
the world's cardinals plan to join the pontiff for five days of liturgical
celebrations, speech-giving, discussion and a musical concert, Vatican
sources said. U.S. church leaders also announced plans to mark the silver
jubilee.
The Vatican program was still being finalized in late August, but the
main features of the Oct. 15-19 events were taking shape:
-- Beginning Oct. 15, the cardinals are expected to gather for a
wide-ranging reflection on Pope John Paul's first 25 years. Cardinal
Christoph Schonborn of Vienna, Austria, told reporters the cardinals would
discuss "the great themes of Pope John Paul II's pontificate."
The program is to include at least six major speeches by cardinals on
such topics as papal primacy, collegiality, ecumenism and international
peace. The sessions will end Oct. 18.
-- On Oct. 16, the cardinals will attend an evening Mass celebrated by
the pope in St. Peter's Square to mark the anniversary of the pope's
election in 1978.
Vatican sources said it was possible that during or after the liturgy the
pope would sign his apostolic exhortation reflecting on the 2001 world Synod
of Bishops, which focused on the life and ministry of the bishop. The
document has been in preparation for months.
-- On Oct. 17, a musical concert is planned for the pope, the cardinals
and other guests in the Vatican audience hall.
At some point, the pope is expected to lunch with the cardinals. All 166
cardinals have been invited to Rome, but it was unclear how many would be
able to attend.
-- On Oct. 19, the pope will celebrate the beatification Mass for Mother
Teresa of Calcutta. As well as the cardinals and many bishops, hundreds of
thousands of Catholics from many parts of the world are expected to attend
the event, which will in effect conclude the 25th anniversary celebrations.
In Washington, a Sept. 10 reception is planned at the U.S. bishops'
headquarters building to introduce two new books showcasing Pope John Paul's
life and ministry: "The Poetry of John Paul II -- Roman Triptych:
Meditations" and "John Paul II: A Light for the World."
A photo display of the pope will begin its yearlong run in mid-September
at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, also in Washington.
Additionally, Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington will lead a
pilgrimage of 260 people to Rome Oct. 12-20, and the Basilica of the
National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will have a special noontime
Mass Oct. 26 in honor of the pope's silver jubilee.
In New York, Cardinal Edward M. Egan will host an unveiling of "John Paul
II: A Light for the World" during an Oct. 6 reception at the archdiocese's
pastoral center.
The museum of the Archdiocese of Chicago will observe the papal
anniversary in November with a photo exhibit of Pope John Paul, coupled with
sales of "John Paul II: A Light for the World" and a second book about the
pope, produced by the Reuters news agency.
In Cleveland, Bishop Anthony M. Pilla will commemorate the 25th
anniversary of the pope's election with an evening service Oct. 22 at St.
John's Cathedral. In the neighboring Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, an Oct. 16
Mass marking the papal anniversary and the diocese's 60th anniversary will
be celebrated.
Some Catholic publications have announced plans to observe the jubilee.
The Arlington Catholic HERALD will publish a special keepsake edition
on Oct. 16 to mark the anniversary. The October issue of St. Anthony
Messenger magazine will publish excerpts and photos from "John Paul II:
A Light for the World."
