Editor's Desk: A United Effort
By Michael F. Flach Herald Editor
(From the issue of 2/24/05)
The generosity of diocesan Catholics was clearly evident during the
recent second collection for the tsunami relief effort. An estimated $1.8
million is expected to be sent to Catholic Relief Services (CRS), making it
the largest second collection in diocesan history (see next week's issue for
more details).
Diocesan officials are hopeful that this level of generosity will
continue over the next few months during the annual Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA).
This year’s theme is "United through the Eucharist, We Pray and Serve." The
BLA is a key component in Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde’s attempt to
expand the ministries of the Church here in Northern Virginia. It is the
primary source of funding for Vocations, Spanish Apostolate, Family Life,
Youth Ministry, Construction Management, Catholic Schools and Catechetics.
It accounts for nearly 40 percent of diocesan operational revenue each
fiscal year.
The local parish remains the visible point of contact for most diocesan
Catholics, but the diocese provides a network of services that often go
unnoticed. Two programs sponsored by the Family Life Office will reach
milestones this year. Theology on Tap celebrates its fifth anniversary,
while Project Rachel, the post-abortion counseling service, marks its 10th
anniversary. Bishop Loverde is scheduled to ordain five men to the
priesthood in June. Our Lady of Hope School in Potomac Falls, built on land
purchased by the diocese, is expected to open next fall.
Bishop Loverde needs our help in fulfilling his mission as shepherd of
the Church in Arlington. So much could be accomplished if only 50 percent of
local Catholics contributed to this effort. Visit the diocesan Web site (www.arlingtondiocese.org)
to learn more about this year’s BLA effort and view a video message from the
bishop. Contact Robert Mueller at the Office of Stewardship and Development
