Father Erbacher Placed on Administrative Leave

In a second report of possible financial irregularities stemming from copies material provided to the Arlington Diocese, an investigation into the records of St. Lawrence Parish in Alexandria has also been commissioned in accordance with Chancery procedures. Father William J. Erbacher, pastor since 1997, has been temporarily placed on administrative leave pending completion of the Chancery investigation. Such action does not imply a judgment of culpability of Father Erbacher or any other staff member at St. Lawrence Parish, diocesan officials stated. Father Terrence Staples has been appointed temporary administrator of St. Lawrence Parish by Bishop Loverde, effective July 18. Father Erbacher has "wholeheartedly agreed" to the audit to help clarify issues in question, said Father Daniel Maher, diocesan vicar for finance. "I consider it a sacred trust that money contributed to the Church is used to support the mission of the Church," Bishop Loverde said. "I want to assure the members of this diocese that a thorough investigation is taking place and appropriate actions will be taken based upon the findings of the investigation."
