‘The Founding Padres’ at Catholic U.

The Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies of
Catholic University in Washington will sponsor a panel
discussion, “The Founding Padres,” April 22, 3 to 5 p.m. in
Caldwell Hall Auditorium, 620 Michigan Ave., N.E.,
Washington.

The discussion will explore the contributions of Blessed
Junipero Serra and two of his peers, Jesuits Eusebio Kino and
Jacques Marquette, to U.S. history and the growth of the U.S.
Catholic Church. The panel will give special emphasis to the
legacy left by Blessed Junipero Serra in light of his
canonization this September by Pope Francis.

The panel of presenters will include: Tucson Bishop Gerald F.
Kicanas, a proponent of the cause of sainthood for Eusebio
Kino; Steven Hackel, author of Junipero Serra: California’s
Founding Father; Tracy Neal Leavelle, author of The Catholic
Calumet: Colonial Conversions in French and Indian North
America; Jesuit Father Gerald Fogarty, professor of the
history of Christianity at the University of Virginia; and
Franciscan Father Joe Nangle, parochial vicar of Our Lady,
Queen of Peace Church in Arlington who served as a missionary
in Latin America for 15 years.
