Alvaré to be honored at CDU gala

Helen Alvaré will receive the Founders Award at the Catholic Distance University awards gala Nov. 21. Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde will host the gala at the Westin Arlington Gateway Hotel, 801 N. Glebe Rd., Arlington, beginning with a Mass to honor CDU's 2015 graduates at 5 p.m.

Alvaré is an adviser to the Civil Rights Law Journal and Latino Law Student Association of George Mason University, consultor for the Pontifical Council of the Laity, adviser to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and founder of womenspeakforthemselves.com.

"During her outstanding career, Helen has focused on the defense of the unborn and has courageously championed marriage in the public arena," said Marianne Evans Mount, CDU president.

Richard Doerflinger, associate director for pro-life activities for USCCB, called Alvaré "a leading spokeswoman for Catholic pro-life feminism."
