St. Martin de Porres Senior Center grand reopening March 9

A grand reopening of St. Martin de Porres Senior Center, 4650
Taney Ave., Alexandria, will be held March 9 from 10:30 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m.

After an Oct. 15 fire temporarily suspended center
programming, activities were
held at nearby Queen of Apostles Church
for about two
months.

The reopening will include a blessing by Oblate of St.
Francis de Sales Father Mark S. Mealey, entertainment by the
Alexandria Harmonizers and lunch provided by Jeffery’s
Catering.

“We are excited to welcome the whole community to the event
and show them the renovated center,” said Gracie Ortiz,
director of senior services for diocesan Catholic Charities.

The fire was caused when a lightning bolt struck the roof
during a severe fall thunderstorm. No one was injured in the
fire, but flames caused damage to the roof and carpet. Along
with repair work, the center was given needed upgrades,
according to Ortiz.

St. Martin de Porres offers meals, recreational activities
and a variety of programs for seniors to promote well-being
and independence. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30
a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

If you go

RSVP for lunch by March 6 at 11 a.m. to Kathryn Toohey or Luis Angel. No reservation
needed for the blessing and entertainment.
