Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax and Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington took their lumps last weekend against the two top-ranked teams in the Washington area.
The Panthers (1-3) lost to top-ranked DeMatha 42-0 Friday night, while the Knights (3-1) fell to second-ranked Good Counsel 35-8 on Saturday.
The Stags boast one of the area’s top running backs in Marcus Coker, who accounted for 246 yards and three touchdowns against Paul VI. The Panthers rely primarily on senior running back Stephen Muskett and senior defensive end Matt McGroarty to shoulder the load.
O’Connell running backs Joshua Trimble and Greg Gadell had difficulty getting untracked on a sloppy field against Good Counsel, which led 28-0 at halftime. Sophomore Wes Brown had 148 yards and two touchdowns for Good Counsel.
It wasn't a total washout for diocesan teams. Senior running back Doug Vines ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns as Bishop Ireton defeated St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes 19-7.
