CDU to honor Bishop Loverde, EWTN
Catholic Distance University (CDU) will honor Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde at its annual gala Nov. 20 at the Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City in Arlington. The Bishop will receive the Founder’s Award for his service to the university as chairman of the board of trustees. EWTN will also be honored with the Founder’s Award for its educational support of CDU. Proceeds from the gala will benefit CDU.
Bishop Loverde has been chairman of the board of trustees since 2003. Under his leadership, CDU became the first Catholic university to award a fully online, accredited master’s degree in theology with no residency required. A bachelor’s degree completion program in theology was added in 2005, along with an online campus, and the university has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Title IV university. Bishop Loverde’s leadership also has contributed to a growing number of diocesan partnerships for catechetical training.
CDU and EWTN have worked together for more than 20 years to deliver education through programming on EWTN’s Catholic cable television network. Most recently, CDU and EWTN Radio have teamed up a for a weekly Sunday evening program called “CDU Presents,” which features CDU faculty and contemporary theological topics.
CDU also will present the Bishop Thomas J. Welsh Parish Award to St. Agnes Church in Arlington. St. Agnes has supported CDU’s mission, encouraging their laity to enroll in CDU’s programs, and supported Sister of Notre Dame Mary Margaret Ann Schlather, dean of catechetical programs and former director of religious education at the parish. The award is named for the late Bishop Welsh, founder of CDU and of the Arlington Diocese.
CDU was founded in 1983 with a mission to “teach all nations,” handing on the teachings of the Church through the techniques and technologies of modern distance education. CDU offers master’s and bachelor’s in theology, a catechetical diploma, advanced catechist certificate, and a variety of continuing education opportunities in theology and faith formation.
The 2010 gala includes an alumni lunch and faculty panel discussion; a convocation Mass celebrated by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States; and a black-tie cocktail reception, dinner, program and dancing.
