Three diocesan parishes are partnering with Fairfax County for the annual Hypothermia Prevention Shelter.
St. John Neumann Church in Reston, St. Mary of Sorrows Church in Fairfax, St. Thomas à Becket Church in Reston, along with Congregation Beth Emeth have come together to host the shelter at St. John Neumann Jan. 19-26.
The Hypothermia Prevention Program was established by Fairfax County in 2005 and its goal is to prevent death and serious injuries among homeless individuals during the cold winter months. As of last year, Fairfax County has more than 1,000 homeless people.
The program provides warm shelter, meals, clothing, toiletries and fellowship to any adult in need.
St. John Neumann has been supporting the Hypothermia Prevention Shelter for 17 years and usually hosts approximately 70 guests.
Besides volunteering to help at the shelter, other ways to support are to donate casseroles, supplies, gift cards, and monetary donations. Email [email protected] for more information.
If you see someone who is unsheltered and you think they are at risk of hypothermia, call Fairfax County’s non-emergency police phone number 703-691-2131.
