Several fall student-athletes from St. Paul VI Catholic High School in Chantilly were awarded the Peter T. Menke Scholar-Athlete Award, the highest honor for student-athletes at Paul VI last month.
Peter T. Menke was the PVI athletic director for 10 years. He died in February 2011, shortly after retiring from more than 40 years in education and athletics. Menke was known and loved by many for his positive attitude, big heart, intense loyalty, honesty and fairness.
The Menke Award is given to a senior (or junior, if a senior is unavailable) on each sports team who exemplifies Menke’s characteristics. This student-athlete must be in high academic standing, be an excellent citizen, have little or no disciplinary record, and be among the top-performing athletes at PVI.
Once the winter and spring team winners are named, then all of the students awarded are reviewed by the administration so the final girl and boy schoolwide Menke Award winners can be presented at graduation.
